What Should You Do After A Car Accident?

What you do immediately after a car accident can make a big difference in your health and finances down the line. But it is hard to think about what to do when you are startled, hurt and trying to make sense of what happened.

At Ritter & Edwards, our lawyers help people who have just been in a car accident figure out the best way to proceed. Here are some things we often advise people to do.

Call The Police.

It is important to have an official report of your accident.

Take Pictures.

Police officers may not always take pictures, or they may not document the full extent of the damage. You should. If you have a camera on your cellphone and are able to take photographs safely, do so. (We often tell clients to carry a disposable camera in their car or truck, just in case.) If possible, document the damage to your vehicle and to yourself, the scene of the accident and any injuries to you or other passengers.

Get The Other Driver's Information.

Be sure to get the other driver's insurance information, name, license plate number and phone number. Take a picture of their car as well as your own.

Get Medical Attention.

Car accident injuries like whiplash don't always show up immediately after an accident. Even if you do not think you have been hurt, it is a good idea to see a doctor to make sure. When we work with car accident victims to prepare a case, it is important to have documentation of the extent of their injuries.

Tell Us What Happened.

Whether your accident just happened or you are just realizing the extent of your injury, our lawyers can help you through the process of negotiating with insurance companies to make sure you receive the full compensation you are entitled.
